Tips on Getting Discounts on Expensive Software
Some software are just too expensive for the average consumer. Some of the high end software such as Photoshop or Microsoft’s Windows and Office might even cost as much as the PC you’re going to put it on. Here are some handy tips on how to get discounts on software.
Get a student copy
Students can enjoy some good discounts off of their university’s computer store and some software companies even directly offer lowered prices to them. This even works for non-students if you’re ordering online. All you need is a .EDU email address to get student discounts, and with some universities letting you keep access to those even after you graduate, you can keep using this to get great deals from Microsoft and from Amazon Student, among others.
Check out cheap OEM software
Though OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) software are made to come pre-installed on computers, you can still get OEM copies from Newegg and other local stores for less than what you can expect from the original. For example, Windows 7 Home Premium costs $199 from Microsoft but the OEM copy from Newegg is only $99. There’s not many programs that come in OEM versions but you can still find a lot of discounts.
Look for software bundles
Software bundles are good opportunities to pick up a few programs at really good prices. You should note though that you won’t really know when the software you want is going to come out in a bundle, and that each bundle will probably be packaged along with less popular filler programs. You just need to keep your eyes out for a bundle that has a couple of the software that you really want so that the total package is actually worth the money you’ll spend.
Follow software developers on social networks
Software companies usually put up sales promos or coupons in social networks like Facebook and Twitter. By following them there, you can keep updated on the current discounted offers they’re giving, in addition to getting the latest news about the software you like.
Shop around and use coupons
Software is still a product meant to be sold and bought, so shop around for the best deal you can get. Try using deal monitoring browser extensions and always figure in shipping costs when ordering online. This works best if you really aren’t in a hurry to get new software, so you can have the luxury of time to actually find really good bargains on the software that you want.
