MTV’s Iggy Crowns K-pop Superstars 2NE1 As Best New Band in the World
Korean pop groups sensation 2NE1 was hailed as the Best New Band in the World by MTV's Iggy. The announcement came after votes were tallied and the all-girl band nabbed the title from La Vida Boheme, Atif Aslam, Yuan and Skrillex.
Fans, who call themselves Blackjacks, from around America came to support their favorite divas by voting for them unwaveringly throughout the whole voting period. After six weeks of intense online competition CL, Dara, Bom and Minzy came up on top and are now ready for global domination.
It's amazing that a band that has yet to release their first full-length album could win this accolade but the girls of 2NE1 proved that talent and charisma sometimes outweighs experience. This is further emphasized by how young the girls of 2NE1 are. Minzy is by far the youngest only turning 17 last January. The other members, CL (20), Dara (27) and Bom (27) also show that their age does not define their maturity.
The band was formed in 20009 by Korean record label and talent agency, YG Entertainment. Their quirky name actually stands for "New Evolution of the 21st Century" and a new evolution they sure are. With the surge of K-Pop popularity, these girls have made a lasting impact on their American fans by their versatile music styles. With hip-hop, pop, R&B and reggae songs under their name, they continue to break barriers and stand apart from most all-girl acts today.
Perhaps the most recognizable of their songs, Fire, garnered more than one million views after only 24 hours of its release. 2NE1's popularity began with their debut record "Lollipop". While the song couldn't be promoted as a single because it was made for LG's Cyon phone and was thus an advertisement, "Lollipop" went on to top various online charts and was number one on Mnet - a music television network - for four weeks. Today, with songs like "I Don't Care", "Fire", "Can't Nobody" and "Clap Your Hands", 2NE1's hits have proven their worth to Korean and American fans alike.
With a career-defining title under their belt, it is only a matter of time before 2NE1 becomes a global hit. Already winners of the Artist of the Year and Album of the Year award at the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards for their debut album “To Anyone”, the girls are no strangers to accolade. It’s only a matter of time before they plan a tour in the US and in other venues across the world.
