2NE1's Surging Success
It didn’t take so long for the South Korean hip-hop/pop girl group,2NE1 (short form of New Evolution 21st Century; pronounced "to anyone" or "twenty-one”) to reach popularity. The girl group debuted back in 2009 with their hit single, “Fire” that was released with two versions of its music video – a “space” version and a “street version”. With just over 24 hours, it became an instant hit online and the rest, as what we say, was history. 2NE1 took Asia by storm gaining fans all over the continent as they debut in countries such as Japan.
Perhaps the reason why the South Korean girl group is experiencing much success is because of its distinct, mixed style. Generally, during the release of their debut single “Fire”, their music can be categorized as pop/hip-hop. But on their comeback album, a noticeable shift into electronic music can be observed. Some songs were categorized as dance while others, R&B. It is in their mixed style of music with a hint of female empowerment that they leave lasting impressions to people who love to listen to them.
2NE1’s market has expanded all throughout Asia and in just a few months from now, they will make their debut in the United States market. The Korean girl group is set to release an album in the United States either late 2011 or early 2012. During the recently held MNET’s Asian Music Award (MAMA) red carpet event, Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap (both are known members of the group Black Eyed Peas) disclosed something about their collaboration with 2NE1. They stated that the project album they are doing with 2NE1 is now almost into completion. Later during the awards night, Will.i.am and Apl.de.ap both put up solo performances and collaborated with 2NE1’s CL with a version of their song, “Where Is The Love”.
